Mong Kok Holistic Development Centre Now in Service!
Offering integrated health and youth services

All through our 120+ years in Hong Kong, the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong (the Association) has provided the public with a huge variety of community services. Lately, we have done this through diverse ministry, whole-person development, support for disadvantaged groups, and the promotion of social inclusion. These services have become more and more necessary in Hong Kong in recent years, given the many complex challenges the city is facing, including rising suicides of schoolchildren, an aging population and health issues caused by lifestyle choices. There is also a need to promote the whole-person development of college students and deepen exchanges with the mainland and the wider world. To meet these urgent needs, the Association has opened our new Mong Kok Holistic Development Centre, offering a number of services to enhance the physical, mental and spiritual health of all Hongkongers.

The Centre is located at 8/F, Chung Kiu Commercial Building, 47-51 Shan Tung St., Mongkok, Kowloon, and is over 6,000 square feet in size. It features four departments:

1. The Health Care Professions Department, providing speech therapy, occupational therapy, child rehabilitation, fascial stretching therapy, and physical therapy services;
2. The Counselling Unit, offering case and group counselling, personal growth advice, life education activities, and a home for Project 404 – our youth mental health service;
3. The University & College YMCA Department, which aligns with various higher education institutions and promotes non-formal education activities at both the local and overseas levels so as to cultivate an adaptable, problem-solving, innovative thinking mindset among student; and
4. The International & Mainland Affairs Section, which maintain exchanges with YMCAs from 120 countries and regions by participating in international conferences and activities to discuss global issues.

So far, the establishment of this new YMCA service point has been well received by the public. The online opening ceremony held earlier this month invited several officiating guests – the Honourable Kenneth Fok Kai Kong, JP, LegCo member; Mr Edward Yu Kin Keung, JP, District Officer of Yau Tsim Mong; Dr Arnold Cheng Cheuk Sang, the President of the Association; and Mr Karl Lau Chun Chuen, the General Secretary of the Association. The Mong Kok Holistic Development Centre is a place that integrates health and youth culture. We are extremely hopeful that this new space will create positive impacts on the entire community by continuing the Association’s long-standing spirit of service and promoting whole-person development through our professional knowledge.

What’s New
Partnering with enterprises to fight the pandemic

During the recent peak of the pandemic’s fifth wave, residents and staff of care homes across Hong Kong suffered terribly, with high infection levels and a great deal of serious disease. In the face of this disaster, many organisations stepped up to help. We would like to extend particular thanks to the Po On Commercial Association for their generosity: they donated a large amount of personal protective equipment to the staff and residents of four Association care homes, including face shields, gloves and other supplies. We would also like to thank companies across Hong Kong that donated anti-epidemic materials to disadvantaged groups during this time. Some companies also deployed volunteers to assist in putting together packages of anti-epidemic materials for distribution. These included New World Development Company Limited (through their “Share for Good” platform), Hongkong Land, Hang Seng Bank, Urban Group, Wang On Properties, the Royal Park Hotel, the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council and Hanison Interior and Renovation Limited. The Association is still welcoming donations from any enterprise in any sector. If your company is interested in donating, please contact us at 2783 3370 orclick here to visit our “Fighting the Epidemic with Enterprises” page.

Drama therapy group for children with special educational needs

The irregular pattern of school suspensions and class resumptions during the pandemic has been difficult for all Hongkongers; but children with special educational needs (SEN) have found it exceptionally hard to adapt. For these children, drama therapy may be helpful. Drama therapists use drama games, role-playing, story-writing and other drama and theatre-related activities to help children express and relieve emotions, improve their social and communication skills, enhance their psychological resilience, and meet other goals to achieve personal growth, psychological transformation and improvements in mental health. The Association is holding several drama therapy sessions in August aimed at both junior primary and senior primary students with SEN.

Junior primary students
Junior primary school students with SEN have had limited opportunities to interact with other children of the same age – their social interaction has been greatly curtailed by pandemic restrictions. These sessions will use drama therapy games and activities to enhance their social skills and help them connect with other children.
Dates: 5/8, 12/8, 19/8, 26/8 (Friday)
Time: 4:00pm to 5:30pm
Number of sessions: 4
Target audience: Junior primary school students with SEN
Number of people: 4-6 people
Cost: $2,150

Senior primary students
Senior primary students with SEN are facing the normal pressures of education while having limited opportunities to interact with their classmates. As such, they may be feeling a lot of emotions. Through drama therapy games and activities, these sessions will enable children to perceive and express their emotions, connect with other children and have their empathy and self-confidence enhanced – together these will help improve their social relationships.
Dates: 5/8, 12/8, 19/8, 26/8 (Friday)
Time: 2:00pm to 3:30pm
Number of sessions: 4
Target audience: Senior primary school students with SEN
Number of people: 4-6 people
Cost: $2,150

Instructor: Miss Li Si Yeung (drama therapist, trained at New York University, theatrical worker, founding member of Mirror the Troupe, and a drama researcher)

Enquiries: 2332 4899 (Counselling Unit)
